Cleaning house makes you want less

May 31st, 2008 at 11:27 pm

We have a weekly ritual in my house & that is on Saturday or Sunday we clean.

There is nothing like decluttering and cleaning your house to make you realize how much you have and don't need more.

Often times, when I clean the house - I find stuff I no longer need and put it in the pile to donate. I guess I could always sell stuff, but since I don't have 10% of my income set to tithe, no matter how little we've ever had, we just donate it.

I've realized that the only kids that will need new clothes for school come September are my oldest and my son. That I have MORE than enough stuff for my kitchen. We have more DVDs than I desire - in fact we should probably try to sell some back to GameStop or something.

The kids have more than enough toys. SO when my son has his birthday next month we'll probably just buy him 4 Hot Wheels cars and a cake he wants, and I know he'll likely be thrilled.

But yeah, there is something about cleaning your house from top to bottom that eliminates your desire to spend and want more because it forces you to take note and reorganize what you already have.

This is where being in the military was wonderful, to the exclusion of the move itself. It gave me opportunities to "cull" out the stuff we tended to accumulate during our tour wherever we happened to be stationed.

No longer in the military/married to a retiree, doesn't mean no longer any moves in my future. There actually is one in the not too distant future, again giving me the opportunity to get rid of things I haven't used in the past 6 to 12 months.

Another good thing about moving is that the clothing you've been wearing around town from your previous residence will be like having a brand new wardrobe at your new residence. No need to buy any.

My nearly 20yo college girl insists on keeping her plush toys she accumulated over the years as a child/tween/teen. Many are of sentimental value to her; they remind her of moments that are still precious to this day. So, this remains hands off unless I approach her and ask if there are some she can give up. Fortunately, none, such as the Ty plush, are collectibles. This is a good thing.

Now, good for you for such an accomplishment. I know it isn't always easy to decide what goes and what stays. Smile

I agree. Clean house over clutter anyday. And cleaning is a much nicer habit than shopping.

I agree. My house is in need of decluttering... just as soon as school is out.
