Not going to have enough

June 9th, 2008 at 11:31 pm

I just looked at the finances, and I'm pretty disappointed with myself.

I'm going to have to drop my summer course. There is just NO way I can come up with the $1000 plus $200 in books and parking passes to attend. Not unless I put it on a credit card - and I'm fairly tempted to do so.

Is it worth it to put it on a credit card?

On one hand I HATE having to use a credit card for tuition. BUT, these are master's degree courses that are only available once a year and the "site" its offered at varies from year to year.

This year the course is offered in my town, so it saves on gas. If I defer it till next year, it'll be in the next town so that is 30 minutes of driving. Plus tuition goes up every year.

I'm just not sure. I was hoping to cut costs this month and I'm really not going to be spending much with DH away, but it is 100 degrees right now so although I try not to use the A/C... when it gets this hot, I have to.

Ok, so minor setback I guess... I'm just not sure if I should take the class. If I don't I'm worried I'll regret it cause the classes are only offered once a year and I need 9 more classes till I have my master's degree.

This is one of those times when it might be short-sighted to not use the CC. Any chance you can get the book cheaper used or online? And what's the parking deal? Can you park cheaper somewhere not as close and walk to class? Or take a bus? Or ride a bike if it is close enough?

Well the parking pass is $42 and its really at a part where I can't park anywhere else and walk. There is a hospital and another community college... and then a police parking lot at the site.. all places require parking passes. So I'd need a parking pass. I might be able to ride a bike but its a night class & there is a section of road that is two lane where the cars are going 55 mph (no real shoulder, except a drainage ditch)... Yeah I'm just not sure.

I think that this is one of the things I would say charge it to the credit card. You are not spending the money on useless junk. Try to pay it as soon as you can. Just my opinion!

Have you con considered talking to the Financial Aid Department / Bursar's Office to see if they can work out a payment plan with you? It might be worth a shot.

I don't think too many of us here would fault you for putting the tuition on the cc. I would sure look at the financial aid office to see if payment are an option. How long until you think you could pay it off? If it's three months or six months, I think it would be worth it to keep plugging away.

Is taking this class part of a bigger plan that would be ruined if you wait a year or two? Do you truly have to take the class this summer? If it would ruin or greatly change a 2,5,10 year plan/goal you and your spouse have, then you should take it and make a plan to pay the CC off. Otherwise, take the summer off and enjoy the little ones.

If it makes you feel any better, I earned my Master's degree on credit cards. Just be sure you have a plan in place to pay it off and don't let it spiral up.

Lots of good advice here - good luck on your decision.

There are some times when the CC is necessary, and there are some times when it makes sense to use the CC. This is one of these times. I earned my Masters on loans, and although I will be paying them back forever, it is completely worth it. Good luck!

I agree with the others. This is a situation where using the credit card is a good idea.

That said . . . If I remember right from the forums, you put $500+ away every month in savings. Could you just not put that amount in savings for 2 months and have the tution, etc. paid off?
