I must live in a bubble, thats my only explanation

March 4th, 2009 at 06:43 pm

Seriously, with the economy and everything - sometimes I think I must live in a bubble. How is life so good for us yet when I talk to other people it is all doom and gloom?

I have a friend who is having problems getting a job. Meanwhile, I'm looking at also getting a part-time job for the "experience". DH is going to get 2-3 raises in the next year, if I pick up this part-time job in the mornings - after childcare thats an extra $300-$500/mo.

For a long while I brushed it off and said, it must just be because he's in the military and I'm in accounting. But no, I know an internal auditor who posted on her blog about her fear of losing her job.

I don't know, if I live in a bubble - nobody pop it. But maybe thats why I'm so optimistic even with the current state of affairs.

I called my Mom yesterday and she was in panic mode too (she owns a McDonalds and although they are doing well she was telling me "DON't leave your job, everybody is losing their job")

And that just isn't my reality. Here I am thinking about taking a 2nd job and constantly getting emails from my accounting major list server about job openings. Jobs seem plentiful.

So, I only hope that the opportunities I see carry on to others that need them. In the meantime, I do feel extremely fortunate and am grateful that things are still looking well.

I do sort of hope I get this job, I'll be assisting a local CPA with her practice. Small practice, but its my foot in the door to getting to know the inner functions of a local CPA practice to one day have my own.

But on the same note, if I don't get it I'll be okay. Although to be perfectly honest, in the past 10 years I've gotten a job offer from every job I've interviewed for.

That's good! I think I kind of live in a bubble too, though a very thin one. I still have a job, but not only that, I just got a (very small) raise. So long as I have a job and am able to move forward financially, I don't think I am doing that badly at all. However, my bubble is most certainly not immune from a burst....

I too think I must be in a bubble. I am actually doing better financially now than I was 6 months ago! Nothing has changed, except my spending habits. But I am able to spend money on vacations and such when no one else is! And I have gotten all myy accounts caught up and paid on time and start a EF! So if I am in a bubble, lets hope that it is made of krytonite!

Wow! You are truly blessed. My husband and I feel like an odd breed right now, a two income family. I have been trying to get a full time job since last November and I send out tons of resumes and get no calls. A real ego deflater. I used to be able to get any job as well. One of my friends said they had a job opening at her place. They got 72 resumes!! They only called in 30 people and of those, only one will get the job. Crazy!! I think if you have a BA or BS or greater, you have a chance, if not, forget it.

AS a CPA I totally understand. Everyone's worried about jobs and I got recruiters ringing my phone off the hook. An experienced CPA (or an accountant who can help with our work load) is SO hard to find. I wouldn't sweat it. I've never faced competition in my field either. (Not that I expect it to last forever, but clearly I am enjoying while it lasts).

I know we are living in a bubble as well. DH quit his job before getting hired for a new one and 4 days later he had a job. I have been told by multiple people that if I ever need a job to just call and my boss gave me a nice raise because he doesn't want me going anywhere.

I think part of the problem is that we all watch and read the news and see national stats on housing, jobs, etc. but those stats may or may not apply to our local area. Just today, I heard a report that 1 in 5 homeowners with a mortgage is upside down on the loan. That is a national average. The report (on a local station) was quick to point out that the situation in this area isn't anywhere near that bad and that those numbers are skewed by places like California and Nevada where the numbers are actually much worse than that.

As for jobs, it also depends on what you do. I'm a physician. I don't know of a single doctor in private practice who has lost their job due to the economy. Certainly, most practices have seen income fall and expenses rise, but we all still have jobs and fully expect to continue to have them for the long term.

Being a dedicated saver, I have seen our portfolio value plummet, but I'm still at least 18 years from retirement, so I'm not panicking just yet. We still invest more than 20% of income. We still have an adequate EF. We still have disability and life insurance. We're still able to do all of the stuff we usually do.

My local area is still doing okay. Yes, some stores have closed. Yes, some jobs have been lost. But at the same time, new construction goes on with stores, restaurants, office space all being added regularly.

I live in a bubble too. I have resigned to the stock market going down the tubes- but everything else for hubby and I is going well. I feel unfairly spared.
